Garrick’s Forge. Press the Blacksmith sign, or the mouth of the forge, and Garrick has a piece on the anvil for you: one a day, ordered by a villager. You work it in three steps, all with one button. Heat: press and hold the bellows, and let go while the pointer is inside the bracket. Strike: three taps, each as a ring closes on the white circle, in the piece’s own beat. Quench: one tap, while the falling pointer is inside the box. How it works at the anvil shows it in pictures, and Garrick will show you on scrap iron, where the iron waits. It comes out Rough, True or Masterwork and pays 5, 6 or 8 Silver. A piece never fails, but one set down half-worked is Rough. Scrap iron may be practised on freely. Every piece is inked into your Pattern Book and counts toward your rank: Apprentice at 3, Journeyman at 15, Smith at 40, Master at 100. Each rank is a title, and opens trims for the name plate over your head, which take Silver and wolf parts and which you work at the anvil yourself. Everyone at the fire sees the trim you wear. The sign glows while today’s piece is waiting. The forge is open at the menu, in the waiting room and to the fallen; never to the living at the fire.
